This week, week 1, we talked about a couple key points in class. The first things we were asked to think about were who we are as readers and writers. This was an interesting concept for me because I had never really thought about it before. I knew I could read and write - duh - but it was insightful to go back and look at how I learned these things. We were asked to explore our writing abilities with Creative Writing time. I've had Creative Writing time in pretty much every English class I have ever taken, but this week it felt different. We were told not to go back and edit; just let everything out. Don't worry about spelling or grammar or even punctuation really. We were told not to delete or erase things, which is something that definitely challenged me. I like things to be perfect, so leaving errors or not going back to reword awkward sentences was a new experience for me. I learned how much different raw writing can be. It's so much more honest.
In the video we watched yesterday I learned a lot after hearing from college students speak about their own writing experiences. We were able to take notes on anything we thought was important. A couple things I learned were 1) Be able to say what you really mean. Think about the point you're trying to make and say that. Keep things precise and clean. 2) Edit. The first draft of any writing will always be the worst. Use the first step to get everything you want to say out on paper, then go through and refine what you wrote to make it even more clear to the reader.
Another thing we talked about in class is writing about things that challenge you, or scare you. We were told that sometimes this creates a whole new dynamic and brings out a completely different side of you as a writer. This was an interesting thought for me because I always thought you write best about what you know best. There was an example that was given to us that said if you believe in God, write like you don't. This was one of the most interesting thoughts for me. I feel like this would definitely challenge me as a writer.
